Build a best of breed company in a dematerialising world

First of all, there is no perfect company. Only a company that responds perfectly to its ever changing environment.

And boy, is our environment changing.

We are going through a state of flux. We are going from analog to digital. From solid to fluid. What was mercantile is becoming frictionless. The world is dematerialising for the better. This new state will have new properties that business structure will need to adapt too. Like Schumpeter on steroids.

Like a water plane coming loose from the water surface. Water is 830 times as dense as air. This is what is happening to businesses in the new digital world. Friction is removed. Old business used to brick and mortar, steel and oil, suddenly find themselves flat-footed, left behind and trampled on. As the light footed, frictionless unicorn gets build on the back of a credit card, unlimited bandwidth, 6 billion hungry new clients at the end of mobile devices ready to be serviced, to be entertained, to be trained, to become your client.

But let’s start off with the building blocks. What does it take to create best of breed companies. This is a list. Not a definitive list but all those thing that matter:

- exponential

- scalable

- frictionless

- disruptive

- a moat, better still a self-enforcing moat

- a high return on reinvested investment

… to be continued
